Alberta Licences for Direct Sellers PDF Print E-mail

THIS ARTICLE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS,,, THIS IS JUST PRELIMINARY RESEARCH AND RITA WILL CONTACT THE DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT LEVELS TO DETERMINE EXACTLY HOW THE LICENCES INTERACT FOR THE DIRECT SELLERS... PLEASE STAY TUNED....

Direct Sellers in Alberta are required to have a Direct Sellers Licence.  Direct Selling is the business of soliciting, negotiating or concluding sales contracts in person at any place other than the seller’s place of business. These contracts are for goods or services that will be purchased by an individual for primarily personal, family or household use. It is a two year licence and costs $120.  Multi-level marketers must also provide an advisory opinion letter from Industry Canada as well as their Distributor Agreement in the application.

Direct Sellers in Edmonton may be required to have a business licence as there is an exemption for people who sell their product in a public place.  As quoted from their website,   "Most businesses operating within the City of Edmonton require a Business Licence.  Business licences are location-specific and you usually need a separate licence for each location you operate from.  Some exemptions to this rule are people who sell their product in a public market, exhibition hall, or are travelling or temporary sales people (i.e. door-to-door)".  Follow this Link to the Edmonton Busines Licence site.

The City of Calgary (BizPal) defines direct sales as "This Canadian industry comprises establishments, not classified to any other industry, primarily engaged in non-store retailing. These establishments use methods, such as door-to-door solicitation, in-home demonstration and temporary displaying of merchandise (stalls), to reach their customers and market their merchandise".  Here is a link to where I was directed when I completed their online survey as a direct seller.

As at Wednesday, June 9.... I will be contacting the different Alberta Governments next week to find out what is required... please check back here or call me at 1-866-864-2137 if you have any comments or experiences with this licencing 'nightmare'...  Regards, Rita.
